A compilation of excerpts from the Freedmen Bureau Records related to the freed people of Staunton and Augusta County, Virginia. A variety of records are included in this collection. The majority are appeals from family members in search of loved ones sold during the years of slavery. Also, included are complaints lodged against spouses for desertion and lack of support. A sample of work contracts between freed people and white employers are provided. In addition, a few documents are included just because they provide a glimpse into the realities of daily live. AA-14 United States Colored Troops Born in Augusta, Bath, Highland and Rockbridge Virginia
The Emancipation Proclamation provided an opportunity for African Americans to be part of the armed service of the United States. With the door to enlistment open, African Americans, free and slave, poured into the Union Army.
This compilation contains the names of 163 of these courageous soldiers born in the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland and Rockbridge, along with a personal summary of each man’s service. They represent a picture of the cross-section of the thousands of the thousands of African American soldiers that made up the USCT. (Bound soft cover book, 56 pages with introduction and index.)
