A compilation of excerpts from the Freedmen Bureau Records related to the freed people of Staunton and Augusta County, Virginia. A variety of records are included in this collection.The majority are appeals from family members in search of loved ones sold during the years of slavery. Also, included are complaints lodged against spouses for desertion and lack of support. A sample of work contracts between freed people and white employers are provided. In addition, a few documents are included just because they provide a glimpse into the realities of daily live.
